As of January 1, 2025, the HVAC industry has undergone a major transition that many homeowners may not be aware of. New federal regulations now prohibit the sale of HVAC equipment that uses R-410A refrigerant. In its place, a new, more environmentally friendly refrigerant—R-454B—is now required for all newly manufactured systems.
This change is part of a larger effort to reduce fossil fuel emissions and improve energy efficiency across the United States. Understandably, many customers have questions about how this impacts them, so we have answered the most common ones below.
Yes, you can. If your current system uses R-410A, there is no need to replace it immediately. R-410A will remain available for servicing existing equipment, and your technician will still be able to maintain your system. However, as demand declines, the cost of R-410A may rise over time.
Thinking of retrofitting your current system to use R-454B? Unfortunately, that is not possible. The pressure requirements and system design for R-454B are not compatible with R-410A equipment. If you want to upgrade to a system that uses R-454B, a new unit will be required.
Refrigerants work by absorbing heat—even at very low temperatures—and transferring it either into or out of your indoor space. R-454B performs this process more efficiently, meaning your HVAC system uses less energy to achieve the same results.
That means:
While 2–3% might sound minor, the impact is massive at scale. Here is what happens when 18 million systems across the U.S. make the switch:
If you are worried that purchasing a new system will cost far more because of the switch, you don't have to stress too much. There may be a slight increase in system costs initially, as manufacturers invest in new equipment and technician training. However, these costs are expected to level out quickly, and the price difference for homeowners should not be significant.
Long term, the efficiency savings will help offset any upfront investment.
We understand the concern when customers see flammability warnings on new equipment. Rest assured, when installed and handled by trained professionals, R-454B systems are just as safe as those using previous refrigerants.
The warnings are part of new labeling regulations, not a sign that the systems are unsafe.
